SPRINGFIELD – Yellow and light blue banners adorned the Illinois House chamber Tuesday afternoon … as lawmakers took time out from the debates of veto session to salute the Chicago Sky – the WNBA champions.
“These are national champions,” Gov. JB Pritzker told WJBC News after the ceremony. “I’m so proud for the state of Illinois, for the city of Chicago, and, frankly, this is something that is well deserved on their part and needed for the state of Illinois.”
For many in the chamber, this was about more than three-pointers and free throws.
“As a young woman who has played sports all my life,” said State Rep. Lindsey LaPointe (D-Chicago), “it’s joyful, because now every girl knows there is a place for women in professional sports.”
It’s the sort of time when everybody is a fan of the Chicago Sky, before returning to such subjects as using the law to get out of COVID tests and whether a girl’s parents should know she’s getting an abortion.
