BLOOMINGTON – Members of the Stand Up for Justice group held signs in front of the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts with hopes of bringing awareness to homelessness.

The organization says the existing affordable housing is at compacity. There are currently over 500 people on the section 8 wait list.

“We need a longer-term solution because the temporary shelters that are offered are just that temporary. It’s transitional and doesn’t really solve the problem of homelessness. there has to be a place for people to move to” says Julie Prandi, Stand Up for Social Justice organizer.

The group is calling for local government and community leaders to use federal stimulus funds to build more affordable housing. They also propose zoning laws be adjusted to permit more mixed income housing.

Bloomington Housing Authority provides public housing to 600 residents but there are still families with children living in temporary housing.

The organization is calling for those living in temporary housing to be given a permanent living option.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
