UIS ceremony honors those who served

SPRINGFIELD – University of Illinois Springfield put on its own Veterans Day ceremony, with a flag-raising in a chilly, windy Student Life Plaza.

“It’s a moment that is worthy of our attention,” said UIS interim chancellor Karen Whitney. “It’s a moment to appreciate that only through the service of who we honor today can we be the democracy that we are proud of and is a light that shines bright for this entire world.”

Gen. Alicia Tate-Nadeau (Ret.), the director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, was the keynote speaker and reminded a small gathering indoors of the holiday’s roots as Armistice Day.

“On the eleventhth day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, the war to end all wars ended.”
