NORMAL – McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder has identified an Illinois State University graduate student who died during a car accident near ISU’s campus Monday evening.

According to a news release, Daniell Fairchild, 23, of Normal, was hit on West College Avenue, near Kingsley Junior High School and Redbird Arena.

Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner said Fairchild was pronounced dead Tuesday at about 4:15 p.m. at Carle BroMenn Medical Center.

Authorities say the 76-year old woman driving the car was cited for failure to stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crosswalk.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Fairchild died from a brain injury due to being struck by the car.

In a news release to the student body on Wednesday, ISU President Dr. Terri Goss Kenzy said Fairchild was a First-year graduate student in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS).

“We are heartbroken at the sudden and tragic loss of Danielle,” noted Dr. Marla Reese-Weber, interim chair of FCS.

The accident remains under investigation by the Normal Police Department, McLean County Coroner’s Office, and the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
