NORMAL – A teacher found a bullet in a Normal Community West High School classroom on Monday. One mother shares how she thought the worst, as this came a week after a school shooting in Michigan.
Sabrina Cavanaugh said she was terrified.
“It was just very nerve racking as a parent,” said Cavanaugh.
Those nerves kicked in when her freshman son texted her from school.
“He said, ‘They found a bullet.’” said Cavanaugh.
Police in Normal said a teacher found a bullet in a classroom at Normal West on Monday.
“The immediate fear was like, ‘Okay, there’s the bullet. Where’s the gun? Ya know, did they hide it somewhere?’” said Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh said she received an email from the school about the incident. It said some students were questioned and searched, but nothing else was found.
“At this point we don’t know what student had the bullet or what their reasoning was,” said Community Services Officer Brad Park, with Normal Police Department.
Park said at this point in the investigation, police would not disclose the caliber of the bullet.
“Our main goal right now, is to try to identify who brought it into the school,” said Park.
Cavanaugh said she was nervous sending her son to school on Tuesday, but said she often has that fear due to the amount of school shootings around the county. And most recently in Oxford, Michigan.
“The world’s getting a little crazy so everyday gets a little more scary as a parent,” said Cavanaugh.
The district said it will continue to be transparent with issues that come up and school safety is its number one priority.
As the investigation continues, police in Normal ask anyone to report any information they may know.
“If you see something, say something,” said Park.
