Earlier this month, State Farm began their annual Season of Giving campaign, with a small twist. Switching things up then in past years, the insurance company held a healthy competition between departments, where employees participated in a program called Acts of Good.

Acts of Good is a program where workers could track their acts of service that helped the community. The department that committed the most Acts of Good in the two week time span of Nov. 29-Dec. 10, was given $10,000 to donate to a non-profit of their choice.

“The winning department was our Enterprise Risk Management, and they selected The Baby Fold. We were able to present a $10,000 dollar check to The Baby Fold on behalf of State Farm’s Risk Management department,” said Brand Promotion Specialist at State Farm, Heather Paul.

State Farm and The Baby Fold have a long tenured past, dating back before World War II. State Farm kicked off their longstanding philanthropic efforts with the Community Chest project, later becoming United Way. State Farm employees then could donate to local charitable organizations, one of which was The Baby Fold.

Vice President of The Baby Fold, Aimee Beam felt honored to be chosen by State Farm employees.

“It was a wonderful Christmas surprise. many of the children we serve are suffering from food and housing insecurities right now. We will use the money to stabilize many families,” Beam said.

As State Farm’s 100-year anniversary nears in June of 2022, acts of service are said to be encouraged by State Farm through their 100 for Good challenge. This program is designed for employees and agents to work together to support the community.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
