BLOOMINGTON – The Vice President of the Bloomington-Normal NAACP Chapter says we still have a ways to go to bring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dreams to fruition.

While some significant progress has been made on a local and national level, Dr. Carla Campbell-Jackson said opportunities are on the horizon for the country to improve.

“When we talk about diversity and inclusion and where people will not be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. It has to become more than just a mere quote by the late, great Dr. King – it needs to be actions.”

According to Dr. Campbell-Jackson, we need to point out racism and act upon it.

“When it is called out (acts of racism), then we’re calling on community leaders and organizations to not get into a state of oblivion where they think it’s not really happening, where they have to admit it to quit it.”

Speaking with WJBC’s Scott Miller, Dr. Campbell-Jackson said the country is making progress with housing availability, filling open jobs, and education.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
