BLOOMINGTON- The St. Jude Radiothon has returned to Radio Bloomington airwaves today (Feb 10) and tomorrow (Feb 11) to raise money to help pay for childhood cancer treatment and research.
The two-day event raised $91,426 in 2021, and St. Jude is seeking your help with donations during this year’s Radiothon.
Breaking ground in 1960 by founder Danny Thomas, his daughter, Emmy Award winning actress Marlo Thomas is advocating for support for the Cancer and Research Hospital.
“Children are very, very ill that come to St. Jude and it cost a tremendous amount of money to save a child’s life that has cancer. The great thing about St. Jude is nobody pays for anything. Not treatment or travel, or housing or food, and that was my father’s promise that every child should get the same first class care. I am so proud of that,” Thomas said.
It takes nearly $3 million dollars for the St. Jude hospital to operate on a daily basis. The survival rate for childhood cancer has risen from 20% in the 1960’s, to almost 90% today.
“We are all just one phone call away from some very bad news. We could pick up the phone and a child is sick, our mom, dad, spouse, our self. If you give money to St. Jude Research Hospital, a child will have a chance of life,” said Thomas.
