BLOOMINGTON – McLean County prosecutors contend a Heyworth man on trial for domestic battery went to extraordinary and illegal lengths to convince a jury that he’s not guilty.

Prosecutors on Wednesday filed 14 charges, 13 of them felonies, against Steve Abdullah.

Authorities say Abdullah and his wife, who is the alleged victim in the domestic violence case, yelled at jurors and held up signs when they came back for a second day of deliberations on Tuesday. The day before, jurors indicated they might be deadlocked in that case.

Abdullah’s wife reportedly told jurors that her husband was innocent, and that she hit him first.

One of the jurors reported Abdullah went so far as to post his business cards in the courthouse elevator.

Prosecutors said Abdullah told authorities he “needed to get his side out” even though he testified at trial.

The judge declared a mistrial, and prosecutors filed new charges including juror harassment, alleging Abdullah’s actions may have caused mental anguish or emotional distress.

Abdullah’s attorney Michael Malin said his client plans to plead not guilty, claiming Abdullah did not intend to intimidate jurors.

The McLean County Jail reported Abdullah posted $15,000 cash bail and was released Wednesday evening. He was ordered to appear in court for his arraignment February 25.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
