CLINTON – A Clinton grocery store owner says inflation is out of control and the worst he has seen in over 50-years.

Clinton Save A Lot owner Dave Jackson said he’s doing everything he can to ease the burden on his customers, but food prices are increasing at alarming rates.

“There’s actually legitimate cost increases due to a lot of labor and a lot of other things that are causing this; trucking, fuel, so a lot of this is legit, but a lot of this is people jumping on the bandwagon. And the other thing that’s happening is companies have been doing this for years – downsizing their product, but keeping the price the same, well that’s inflation.”

In the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading, inflation remained red hot at 7.5%. However, Jackson says inflation is higher than the latest reading.

“You know they’re claiming 6.8 or 7%; I’m going with about 17% inflation. It is severe. Every single manufacturer that delivers to my store, direct delivery Save A Lot everything is going up at a pace we can hardly keep up with.”

Jackson, who has spent decades in the grocery business, said inflation is the worst it has been in 50-years.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
