Mike McCuskey’s recently appointed legislative inspectors general role accused of foul play

SPRINGFIELD-It’s congratulations, or maybe condolences, for Mike McCuskey, a retired judge who is now legislative inspectors general, appointed Thursday after a fractious debate in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

While Peoria native McCuskey is seemingly universally respected, Republicans accused super majority Democrats of ramming the appointment through, as opposed to following their own rules to vet candidates. McCuskey says he knows politics, and he knows that discussion was not about him.

“A lot of my friends say, we’re glad you want to do public service again, but why do you want this job?” McCuskey says he can make a difference. “I’m old – 73 – my tank’s half full, but I think I can still do a good job for the people of the state of Illinois.”

Previous legislative inspectors general have quit, saying the job has no real power. McCuskey says he’d rather find out for himself.

He will field complaints – one sits on his desk already – and possibly refer them to the attorney general, a state’s attorney, or to the Legislative Ethics Commission.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
