NORMAL – March is Women’s History Month, and a Illinois State University Professor is looking back on history.
Dr. Jenna Goldsmith, the assistant director of Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies at ISU, said the month is a ‘contemporary celebration’ to honor women around the globe.
“For me, it feels pretty contemporary, and I think other people would feel the same way. Now we see a lot of women’s history stuff in the media, we see it on television, we hear people talking about it, so it’s ever evolving.”
According to Dr. Goldsmith, the month provides an opportunity for others to learn and support women’s history.
“For other folks who are really interested in celebrating women’s history, there are lots of ways to do so,” she told WJBC’s Scott Miller. “I suggest learning one new fact about the history of women every day of the month; that’s one thing you can do. (And) support women in the roles that they are in. So let the women in your life know that they’re supported and providing support in any way that feels supporting.”
Another way to honor women, according to Dr. Goldsmith, is to contact local lawmakers about legislation that impacts women.
Tuesday, March 8th, is International Women’s Day.
