BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington woman is free on bond after prosecutors charged her with criminal neglect that led to her mother’s death late last year.
The allegations against Carrie Funk include that she and her mother lived in filthy conditions at their Bloomington home, and that first responders found the older woman on the floor with multiple open sores, and insects crawling in and out of her mouth.
The woman was severely malnourished and dehydrated, and authorities also found garbage and animal feces on the floor, according to prosecutors’ probable cause statement that they presented to the judge.
Gudrun Ashley, 74, died December 3, according to her obituary. At the time, police and the McLean County coroner did not release a statement indicating they were conducting a death investigation.
The charge alleges that between last August and December, Funk failed to provide sanitary living conditions, adequate daily care, or seek medical treatment for her mother.
Funk, who is 54, faces up to 14 years in prison if she’s found guilty of the Class 2 felony. She could also avoid prison time and be placed on probation.
The McLean County Jail reports Funk posted $15,035 cash and was released while she awaits trial.
