NORMAL – Electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive is expanding its presence in Normal even though the company’s second factory will be built in Georgia.
Rivian and town staffers confirmed Thursday it is leasing land at 301 West Kerrick Road in Normal for a nearly $30.4 million warehouse expansion. Rivian already has a warehouse there, and wants to add 500,000 square feet.
The site is owned by Phoenix Industries, and P.J. Hoerr of Normal is the contractor, according to the building permit issued by the town.
”We’re excited to continue growing in Normal,” said Maura Freeman, who is Rivian’s plant communication coordinator.
Information about new jobs created by the expansion and a timeframe for construction was not immediately available.
Freeman said the plant in Normal currently employs 5,075 team members.
