BLOOMINGTON – It’s scholarship season for students in high school and college, and the Golden Apple Scholar Program is looking to assist folks interested in teaching.

The Golden Apple Scholar Program has extended their application date from April 1st to the 15th.

Chief Program Officer and Golden Apple Scholar Kesa Thurman Stovall shared that the deadline had been postponed to give students another chance to apply.

“The Golden Apple Scholars Program is a long standing teacher preparation and tuition assistance program targeted at high school seniors and freshman and sophomores that are in colleges and universities pursuing a degree in education,” Stovall said.

Scholarship recipients would receive up to $23,000 in total financial assistance for college, extensive classroom teaching experience, and job placement assistance.

Illinois is currently facing a devastating teacher shortage crisis that is only getting worse. According to a recent report released by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents, 88% of school districts statewide report having a teacher shortage problem in 2021, up from 77% in 2020.

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
