NORMAL – Parents, students and more came together at Normal West High School Saturday to learn about the latest updates within the Unit 5 school district.

The district hosted a ‘Community Engagement’ session where administration members talked about recent successes and challenges.

Superintendent Kristen Weikle touched on challenges the district faces, including the two million dollar cuts in teaching jobs, educational programs and the $11 million deficit.

The first community meeting is part of a four-phase process that creates a final plan to resolve issues in the district and they’re starting with community feedback for solutions.

“We’ve been responsive to the mandates, we’ve been responsive to the needs of our students,” Weikle said. “We’re at a point though where our education fund deficit can’t be ignored anymore,” Weikle added.

The group also discussed a possibility of a referendum to help reduce the school district’s massive deficit.

The next two community engagement meetings are April 25 at Kingsley Junior High School from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and a virtual meeting Tuesday, and people can register at Webinar Registration – Zoom.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
