I-55 ambulance hijacker arrested, identified by Illinois State Police

BLOOMINGTON – Illinois State Police has identified 46 year old Benjamin Herrington as the fleeing subject in the ambulance hijack seen on Interstate 55 on Monday.

A section of Interstate 55 was closed Monday evening after police chased Herrington from Chicago to Dwight.

State Police said the chase ended at about 6:30 p.m. when the ambulance stopped and Herrington was taken into custody.

Herrington is being charged with fleeing to elude a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Herrington was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was released to police custody and transported to the Grundy County Jail awaiting transfer to Cook County.

Authorities said I-55 was closed in both directions near Illinois Route 17 at milepost 217.
