BLOOMINGTON – An enclosed porch fire at a home on Jersey Avenue in Normal has displaced residents Friday.

The Normal Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Jersey Avenue at around 12:20 p.m.

According to a release, Normal Fire Chief Mick Humer was in the area and first on scene about a minute later.

He verified that the homeowners were safe and reported back to the responding units that an enclosed porch on the rear of the home was fully involved in fire and the fire was spreading into the home.

The first engine arrived a few minutes later and pulled a hose line to the back yard and began fighting the fire.

The incident was upgraded early and Bloomington Fire Department responded with two engine companies and a ladder truck to assist with fire suppression. Off-duty Normal firefighters were also called in to staff reserve apparatus and respond to other calls during the incident.

No official damage estimate is available until the insurance adjusters have a chance to survey the property. The house sustained heavy fire damage to the rear, including an enclosed porch which was destroyed. The fire spread into the roofline and entered the attic space and there was some damage to the interior of the home where fire had spread through the windows. The house had extensive smoke and water damage throughout and is inhabitable.

The fire department says the home is insured, and the tenants have rental insurance. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupants with immediate needs.

There were no injuries reported to the occupants or firefighters at the scene.

Fire investigators are working at the scene to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
