SPRINGFIELD – Reaction was immediate Monday night to the blockbuster news that the U.S. Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade soon.
A shocked Sen. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), a leading pro-choice lawmaker, said still, all is not lost.
“I think that (Illinois lawmakers) were clairvoyant when we took a very close look at the abortion act in our state and began to repeal some of these egregious problems,” said Feigenholtz.
Repeals include the parental notification law. Other legislation preserved abortion law in the state in the event of a Roe reversal. Illinois is now considered a haven for people who want to end pregnancies.
Sen. Steve McClure (R-Springfield) says the Supreme Court would not outlaw abortion if it does overturn the nearly fifty-year-old law.
“It would put it up to the states,” he said, “because it’s not really the job of the Supreme Court to make legislation, which is really kind of what Roe v. Wade did; it allowed for this constitutional protection that was not really in the Constitution.”
McClure said changes to Illinois abortion law are unlikely, seeing as how Democrats have a supermajority in the legislature.
Gov. Pritzker is scheduled to hold a press conference Tuesday morning about the topic.
