NORMAL – Normal native Leah Marlene is moving on to the top three on singing competition ‘American Idol.’

Marlene sang her own renditions of ‘I’ll Stand By You’ by The Pretenders and ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ by Journey. During the episode, contestants were guided by former ‘Idol’ champion and Grammy award-winning artist Carrie Underwood. For Marlene, she says it was a dream come true.

The Bloomington-Normal community gathered Sunday night for the Leah Marlene Watch Party at Normal West High School. Leah’s dad, Derry Grehan, was at the event and he spoke with WJBC’s Scott Miller.

“It’s overwhelming and incredible. Who would have ever known this. It is so heartwarming what the town has done and the way everyone has exploded and the popularity of Leah. She is so overwhelmed by it all and what can I say, it’s just really great,” said Grehan.

The grand finale of ‘American Idol’ will air next Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 PM on Heart of Illinois ABC.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
