SPRINGFIELD – Now that gubernatorial candidate State Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) has drawn more criticism for comparing abortion to the Holocaust, Republicans all over the state are being asked about it.
The Republican running for treasurer, State Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) says while Bailey was wrong to invoke the Holocaust, look at the context:
“During the primary, the largest supporter of the Bailey campaign were Democrats. (incumbent treasurer) Mike Frerichs and his Democratic allies were playing the same game that we are seeing being played all over the country. So I think it’s a little hypocritical and disingenuous to now be feigning this outrage and disgust over a candidate they were supporting in the primary.”
Demmer – who says Bailey would make a good governor – is referring to commercials funded by the Democratic Governors’ Association which portrayed Bailey as a gun-loving, pro-life Trumpster – exactly what Republicans want.
Demmer says Frerichs has spoken out in favor of a tax on retirement income. In a statement, Frerichs says Demmer is a failure and a liar.
