PONTIAC – New testimony says a man accused of killing three people may be telling the truth about what happened.
The defense continued to bring witnesses forward as the trial of Clifford Brewer continued Monday in Pontiac.
The defense called forensic pathologist Dr. Shaku Teas forward in day five of the trial of Brewer – accused of murdering his wife, son and neighbor.
She says the bullet that killed Shirley Brewer entered at an angle at a relatively close distance and not straight on.
The defense claims Brewer’s wife Shirley killed her son, neighbor and then died by suicide on Christmas Day in 2019.
Teas testified that this gunshot wound was atypical in images shown to the jury.
That takes into account damage to the skull and the amount of gunpowder on the skin.
According to Teas, details of the story Brewer told his daughter Bonnie LaCroix about Shirley’s alleged crimes is consistent with her findings.
That includes a possible attempt to take the gun away from Shirley.
Brewer’s daughter herself was also called to testify.
She says she looked up to her father and was best friends with her mother.
According to her, Shirley was suffering severe physical pain that she had to medicate for.
But Shirley’s behavior began to devolve into concerning patterns.
They include a video call on her mother’s birthday on Christmas Eve – the day before she died.
During the call over Facebook messenger, she saw her mother was in a poor mental state.
Lacroix adds her father was considered a law-abiding man and that while her parents had their arguments there was nothing unusual about their relationship.
The judge says presentation of the remaining evidence may only take one more day, with closing remarks possible by Tuesday.
