NORMAL – Starting Tuesday, Virginia Avenue between South Linden Street and Hillcrest Street will be closed to traffic. Weather permitting, the road closure is expected to last until late October. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling through the area.
The road closure is required for maintenance to the Camelback Bridge.
In April, the Town of Normal Council voted to make repairs to extend the life of this historic structure and avoid more costly repairs in the future. The Camelback Bridge was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and was reconstructed in 2001. The bridge is in need of general repairs, including wood re-decking and painting.

Repair work to the Camelback Bridge will also require closures to the Constitution Trail beginning Sept. 6. Initial trail closures are anticipated on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with no identified detours. Day and night closures will be required later in the project.
Closures will be signed appropriately along Constitution Trail. Length of closures vary, depending on work progression and weather.
