SPRINGFIELD – It’s a phrase popularized by Mister Rogers: “Look for the helpers.”

But who helps the helpers? The first responders see someone on their worst day, and sometimes on their last day. That’s not for everyone, but Illinois State Police Trooper Elizabeth Clausing says help’s available for her colleagues; she is a peer support advisor.

“A lot of times, it’s just being a listening ear and allowing somebody to have a conversation with you and really taking the time to actually listen. That’s kind of where it starts,” said the Elgin-based Clausing. “We do proactive outreach, and we also are here for people if they would like. The department members and their families can call us directly.”

A recent crash on I-55 near Springfield led to at least one driver being burned to death so severely that authorities at first could not tell if the victim were a man or a woman. Other cases, of course, can involve a murdered baby. That can’t be easy to handle.

Clausing is a regional coordinator for this part of ISP’s wellness program. She says health includes mental health.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
