SPRINGFIELD – Freshman enrollment is up at Illinois public universities.
There’s been a five percent increase in the number of freshmen enrolled this school year. That compares to a decrease of more than two percent nationally says State Board of Higher Education spokesperson Jose Garcia.
“This definitely does set us ahead of national trends and we are hopeful that we are able to continue this trend,” said Garcia. “We are working hard with our university partners to ensure this isn’t an anomaly and that we continue this trend moving forward.”
Garcia says enrollment of Latino and African American students increased significantly this fall.
Schools seeing the highest percentage of overall student growth include Governor’s State, Northeastern Illinois and Western Illinois.
