BLOOMINGTON – Illinois lost an estimated 104,000 residents between 2021 and 2022, the third highest loss after New York and California, according to a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday.
Only New York’s 0.9% decrease was greater than Illinois’ 0.8% decline to 12.6 million residents.
The statistics account for births, deaths, and moves within and between states. In terms of net migration loss, Illinois ranked third with 141,000.
According to the projections, Illinois stands out as an abnormality in the Midwest. While Ohio and Michigan had slight population losses, all the bordering states experienced modest population growth.
According to a bureau official, these statistics should be carefully interpreted.
The figures presented on Thursday are estimates based on data from the IRS, Medicare, and organizations that collect vital statistics.
