SPRINGFIELD – People who watch the Tournament of Roses parade Jan. 2 – in person or on tee vee – should get a hankering to visit Illinois, if the state’s Office of Tourism has its way.

For the first time, Enjoy Illinois is entering a float in the Rose Parade. At one end: a Lincoln bust. At the other end: the Garden of the Gods. There will also be a real waterfall and a real American Idol finalist: Illinois native Grace Kinstler, who will perform.

“We’ve been looking for new ways that we can put Illinois on a national stage from a tourism perspective,” said Illinois tourism spokesman Daniel Thomas. “When you think of all the pent-up demand for travel and tourism, people across the country are incredibly excited by getting out and experiencing new destinations.”

From Lincoln sites to the attractions of Chicago to Route 66 to the wineries and natural beauty of Southern Illinois, the float presents as its theme the slogan for Enjoy Illinois: “The Middle of Everything.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
