BLOOMINGTON – The Chicago Bears Fan of the Year is wrapping up his week out in Glendale,Arizona following the Chiefs win over the Eagles in Super Bowl 57.

Normal native and State Farm executive Corey Schieler received the news he’d be in attendance for the big game months ago, as he was honored by the Chicago Bears as a nominee for NFL Fan of the Year.

“It was an incredible game, and really just a once in a lifetime experience these last five days. To be there and watch the comeback from Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs was very special. I was sitting right next to the fans of the year from Kansas City and Philadelphia, so the rivalry was on throughout the whole game. The halftime show was great. Again, just so thankful for the opportunity to be there,” Schieler told WJBC’s morning host Scott Miller.

Aside from walking the red carpet at the NFL Honors Ceremony, taking the field ahead of the big game, and chatting it up with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Schieler says the best part of it all was his time with the Make A Wish Foundation.

“It all goes back to Make-A-Wish, that’s probably the reason why I was chosen as the Bear’s fan of the year by what my wife and I do to give back to the community for that great organization. Having the opportunity to meet those kids and see this experience through their eyes and see how excited they were re-inspires me,” Schieler said.

Seattle Seahawks nominated fan Larry Bevans took home the NFL Fan of the Year Award the NFL Honors Ceremony on Saturday.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
