GIBSON CITY – After serving the Illinois state legislator for many years, Illinois State Senator Tom Bennett is retiring from the General Assembly.

Senator Bennett, a Republican from Gibson City, served in the Illinois House of Representatives in the 106th District from 2015 to 2023.

During this time, he was appointed to the State Senate to replace former State Senator Jason Barickman, who resigned from the position.

While serving his constituents, Senator Bennett served on many school boards, including 19 years on the Parkland College Board of Trustees.

In a statement, Senator Bennett said he still has a lot of legislative work to do and a lot of people yet to meet.

“I am also grateful for my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the General Assembly – we come from different parts of the state, with different backgrounds, sometimes holding very different viewpoints, but we have tried to respect each other and work together on issues important to the people of Illinois.”

Senator Bennett will finish his term, which ends at completing the 103rd General Assembly in January 2025.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
