SPRINGFIELD – There were 5.8 days suitable for field work during the week ending October 8, 2023. Statewide, the average temperature was 62.9 degrees, 5.3 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.58 inches, 0.22 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 14 percent very short, 36 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 23 percent very short, 35 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

Corn mature reached 96 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 85 percent. Corn harvested reached 42 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 39 percent. Corn condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 97 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 85 percent. Soybeans harvested reached 44 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 36 percent. Soybean condition was rated 6 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 30 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 24 percent. Winter wheat emerged reached 5 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 6 percent.
