BLOOMINGTON – Surveys and meetings were held by Bloomington officials to get the opinion of community members on what they would like to see be implemented in the remodel.

Questions on the survey included if they would like to keep historic characteristics or spring for a more modern look; another, if they would prefer more parking or more walkability amongst businesses. The answer, a hybrid.

Deputy City Manager, Billy Tyus said that they want to bring all the aspects they can to engage citizens in the outdoors. “We’re looking to activate spaces. We want people to come downtown and to shop and to eat and to do other things similarly. But we also want to create spaces where people can just come down and read a book or eat their lunch outside.”

The city is even looking into installing active art. Where children can play on the artwork in the area. Tyus said that being outside makes people feel good, and he wants to engage people in the already thriving downtown spaces while adding accommodations for those with disabilities.

The project will be started on Main Street and will be done in phases. The budget and exact end date of the remodel are yet to be determined, as no decisions are set in stone just yet.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
