SPRINGFIELD – The shooting death of a mother and daughter in Chicago – allegedly by the husband / father – last summer inspired “Karina’s Bill,” which would make it easier to remove guns from the home of an alleged abuser.
In the case of Karina Gonzalez, she had already taken out an order of protection against the husband.
The bill was introduced during the fall veto session and has gone nowhere. A spokesman for the Senate president said in the fall that the bill needed work to resolve such matters as enforcement.
That’s done little to appease the sponsor, State Sen. Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago).
“Damn if I’m not pissed off that we can’t get this done,” Villanueva said through tears at a Chicago news conference Wednesday. “I’m pissed off that we continue to have conversations about gun violence, and people prefer to keep guns in the hands of abusers and people who should not have guns.”
The legislature is back in session the week of Feb. 5.
