BLOOMINGTON – A release of 2023 crime statistics by the Bloomington Police Department shows fewer homicides and fewer people shot but increases in other categories.
Shootings dropped from 42 in 2022 to 30 in 2023, a decrease of 12. The number of people who were shot, predictably, dropped as well. There were 15 people shot in 2022 compared to nine in 2023.
The report was released by the department along with nearly 20 pages of information regarding other facets of the Bloomington Police Department including how their school resource officers were doing, how recruitment was going and about each division within the department.
Such reports are common. Peoria released theirs a few weeks ago.
Overall, crimes against people — kidnappings, sex offenses, assaults and homicides — were down 3% or about 49 reports. All categories within that large group were down but sex offenses. They were up 39% or about 29 reports.
Crimes against property such as thefts, arsons, fraud and vandalism, to name a few, were up 1% or by 19 reports. Notably, extortions were up 121% going from nine reported in 2022 to 21 in 2023.
Arsons were up 75% at 14 reported in 2023 as compared to 8 in 2022.
