BLOOMINGTON – Lockdowns at Bloomington High School and Junior High School have ended and one person has been taken into custody, district officials said.

“With the help of the Bloomington Police Department, we swiftly addressed the situation and can confirm the lockdown has now been lifted. A subject was apprehended and no weapons or credible threat were found on the person,” said Gina Lavazza, a spokeswoman for Bloomington Public Schools District 87.

Details regarding the arrest and what led to the lockdowns or even when they occurred wasn’t immediately known. Lavazza said the schools were “temporarily placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution due to a received report implying a potential security concern.”

Classes are now back to a normal schedule, and students are moving about the building and back to their normal activities, she said. The moves were taken, she said, to protect students and employees.

“While the report turned out to be false, we take every report of potential danger very seriously, with the well-being of our students and staff being our highest priority,” said Lavazza.

A statement from District 87 Superintendent Dr. David Mauser:

“We received a notice that a student from another school was headed to our campus potentially with a weapon.  When the subject arrived and was located they were detained by police. No weapon was located on the person or subsequently through video review of the incident.  We went on lockdown until we knew that students and staff were safe and that no credible threat existed.  Luckily, we have resource officers and a director of safety and security that can help us with any potential issues like this really quickly.  Gina Lavazza (our director of communications) sent out a press release after…and notification to our families etc. None of this involved any BHS students and all information came to us from a neighboring district and involved their student from my understanding.  Police took it from there.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
