SPRINGFIELD – There were 2 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending May 5, 2024. Statewide, the average temperature was 65.4 degrees, 8.2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.48 inches, 0.59 inches above normal.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 4 percent short, 53 percent adequate, and 43 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 9 percent short, 60 percent adequate, and 31 percent surplus.
Corn planted reached 32 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 41 percent. Corn emerged reached 13 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 10 percent. Soybeans planted reached 31 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 30 percent. Soybeans emerged reached 12 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 6 percent.
Winter wheat headed reached 65 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 24 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 13 percent excellent.
