BLOOMINGTON – Residents in the City of Bloomington will not have to pay a utility tax on their water bill next month due to an issue identified on the city’s utility bills.
According to Bloomington’s Communication & External Affairs Manager Katherine Murphy, an issue was identified in the processing of the utility tax rates for the fiscal year 2025 that affects the utility bills of Bloomington residents.
The utility billing system correctly prorated the water consumption rate increase for the new fiscal year but did not correctly process the tax rate reduction for fiscal year 2025. Instead, it charged residents with the combined tax rates of the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years, according to Murphy.
The city decided to compensate for the overcharge by waiving the utility tax for all accounts charged over the next month.
Murphy stated that the city apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciates residents understanding as they work to prevent a similar occurrence from happening in the future.
