LEROY – The LeRoy Police Department is warning its residents that they will face increased fines if they launch fireworks this summer.
At LeRoy’s City Council meeting on Monday, the city reaffirmed that fireworks are illegal in the city and increased the ordinance fine to $750.
According to the LeRoy police, last year, several groups decided to host their own commercial-grade firework displays in LeRoy and were issued ordinance citations and ordered to cease or face additional citations or arrest.
Fireworks are illegal under state law and city ordinance unless you are a professionally licensed pyrotechnic with proper permits.
Anything that propels into the sky and explodes is considered illegal. Sparklers, snakes party poppers and smoke bombs are allowed, according to the LeRoy Police Department.
