2024 Back to School Shoe Drive to Help Local Kids in Need

Back to School Show Drive

No kid should have to go back to school with shoes full of holes or NO SHOES AT ALL!

We are once again teaming with Country Financial Representative Melissa Isenburg to collect new athletic style shoes for kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. Our goal is to collect at least 300 pairs of new shoes to distribute to children in need locally.

You can drop off the new shoes at Melissa’s office at
2203 Eastland Drive, Suite 4 in Bloomington
or the Cumulus Media Bloomington Studios & Offices at
236 Greenwood Avenue in Bloomington

While these shoes do not need to be in a box, they do need to be new. If they are not in a box, please connect them by tying the laces to each other to keep matching pairs together.

If it makes things easier for you, we will have people at Denny’s Doughnuts and Bakery (1107 S Main St, Bloomington) each Thursday morning listed below to collect your shoe donations OR monetary donations that will be used to buy shoes.

  • Thursday, July 11th – 7am to 10am
  • Thursday, July 18th – 7am to 10am
  • Thursday, July 25th – 7am to 10am
  • Thursday, August 1st – 7am to 10am

If it is more convenient for you, you can donate through a Venmo account that Melissa Isenburg has set up. Her user name is @Melissa-Isenburg16. Scan the QR Code below to donate…

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
