BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington 12-year-old was one of 14 honorees recently recognized nationally by Nickelodeon.

This was for the networks’ inaugural Our World award. She was chosen for the honor in collaboration with the Jefferson Awards.

Since she was four, Disha Rai said she’s been in her community… leading a life of service.

“For me, going out and volunteering in the community is one of the best feelings so, it’s really an amazing experience to be able to do it,” said Rai.

Rai volunteers in youth organizations, participates in 4-H, and gives back through nonprofit work like Midwest Food BankMarch of Dimes, and the area Humane Society. She also volunteers with EKAL Helping Hands and SEWA International.

“Everything from serve as a crossing guard for our city’s annual Memorial Day parade, cook and serve at the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen, and volunteer with a food drive to help local charities,” said Rai.

Rai said 4-H has opened the doors of opportunity allowing her to find new ways to make a difference here in central Illinois.

“Whether you’re six or 16, you just get to grow an entirely different skill set,” said Rai. “You can branch into your community through the variety of people you meet through 4-H, and you can make connections with those the variety of projects 4-H has to offer. From goat shows, to leadership, to journalism, there is something for everyone, which I think is amazing.”

All that involvement lead to her being recognized nationally by Nickelodeon during the Kids’ Choice Awards 2024.

“I just remember being excited, really really happy, and just honored that I had been chosen for this award along with the countless other amazing kids that were chosen,” said Rai.

She hopes to inspire other young people to know their impact can be limitless.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
