MCLEAN COUNTY – YouthBuild McLean County has some building going on, all thanks to the Lowe’s Hometowns Program.

YouthBuild is a program for low-income youth and adolescents, where the kids are able to build, learn and develop skills for adulthood, and the YouthBuild location in Normal has an open space next to its building.

The McLean County School applied for the Lowe’s grant, and will be receiving $180,000.

YouthBuild plans to turn the space into a sanctuary for staff and students. It will include a recreational space, a large pavilion, garden plots and a goose habitat.

YouthBuild students will help with the construction of their new space.

“If we can provide them these opportunities and make YouthBuild feel like the special place and look like the special place that we all know, that it is the place that has made such a huge difference in so many people’s lives. I feel like it just kind of validates the work that our students are putting in that despite everything that they’ve been through, that they’re worth it,” said Tracey Polson, the YouthBuild Executive Director.

There were also be a big volunteer work day in the future so community members can get in on the project.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
