PEORIA – Anna Peplowski will bring silver back to central Illinois.

The Metamora High School grad helped Team USA take the silver medal in the women’s 4×200 relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Thursday. Peplowski is a senior at Indiana University.

She was the leadoff swimmer for the U.S. in the preliminary race on Thursday in Paris. She helped the Americans win that race and earn a spot in the final.

However, she was not chosen to be in that U.S. foursome that would swim for the gold as Team USA was resting three swimmers, including Katie Ledecky, who were slotted for the final.

Nonetheless, area fans cheered on Peplowski and Team USA in the medal race which was won by Australia. Germantown Grille, a restaurant in Peplowski’s hometown, hosted a watch party for the final.

“Everyone has had a part of the puzzle, but the big piece of it is her family and who Anna is as a person,” said Metamora High School swim coach Shane Morrison, who coached Peplowski. “She’s not only a great competitor and swimmer but just swimmer and person.”

China took the bronze medal.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
