BLOOMINGTON – The co-owner of Coffrin’s ATA Martial Arts has been given the title of master instructor by the American Taekwondo Association, the school announced Tuesday.
Elisha Coffrin, who has studied martial arts since 1997, reached the historic milestone by becoming the third highest-ranking African American woman in the ATA and the highest-ranking African American female in Illinois, the company said in a news release.
The title of master instructor is given to those who have achieved the rank of 6th degree black belt and who have completed a rigorous one-year process of comprehensive preparation which includes extensive reading, writing, physical training, and mental fortification.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work that Elisha has poured into her craft,” said Corey Coffrin, co-owner and Elisha’s husband and instructor. “We are incredibly proud of her and excited to see her continue to inspire and lead within our community.”
The school said the accomplishment highlights the growing diversity and leadership within the martial arts community.
