Local taxpayers could be on the hook for a new ‘homeless hotel’

BLOOMINGTON—If the plans come to fruition, local taxpayers could be responsible for funding a new homeless hotel.

Matt Burgess, CEO of Home Sweet Home Ministries, is exploring the possibility of turning a local hotel into a new homeless center.

“It would be a long-term investment in what we believe is a legitimate long-term solution,” he said on WJBC’s Afternoon Show. “It would radically change what our ability to provide services looks like in this community.”

However, the project could come with a hefty price tag.

“Right now there’s an ownership situation when it goes to that. But also, does it make financial sense? Like heartstrings, wise and emotionally, it makes a ton of sense. Financially (I) don’t know yet,” Patrick Hoban, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council, told WJBC. “We need to try and figure that out because there’s going to be taxpayer dollars on there, and I’m not going to do anything that’s going to put a burden and get ourselves in over our head that does not have the right return of investment.”

Hoban expects the city and local non-profits to have a better idea of funding near the end of the month.

If the plans come to fruition, it could become a long-term home for 30 individuals who call a parking lot near HSHM home.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
