NORMAL – Heartland Community College is planning for its future.

The college’s Board of Trustees allotted $35 million for general obligation debt certificates.

This will be money Heartland can use towards projects including, but not limited to, renovations to their Workforce Development Center and its Hawk Cafe and the Advanced Manufacturing and Technical Center.

The campus was constructed in 1990, and Public Information Specialist with Heartland, Steve Fast, said the campus needed a revamp.

“We want to make sure that you get a little bit of an upgrade and a little bit of a refresh,” Fast said. “And we’re luckily, we’re lucky that through the fiscal planning that we’ve had over the last five, six years and even going back further from that has really helped us get into a position to do that without having to pass any of that cost really along to our tax payers.”

Fast also said the renovations will make Heartland Community College even better. There will also be renovations of student spaces along with technology improvements.

The college is not required to use all of the money, but it will be fully available for their future projects should it need to be.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
