BLOOMINGTON – A white substance found in a creek near the intersection of Airport Road and North Hershey Road in Bloomington was discovered to be paint.
Bloomington firefighters were called to the area at about 7:40 p.m. Thursday and found a “significant amount of material was in the creek.” The city’s public works department helped the fire department trace the material back through a storm drain to an area on Gill Street.
The material was not deemed to be a threat and later found to be paint.
“Absorbent booms and socks were put in three locations as a measure of caution,” the department said
In a statement, Capt. Frank Friend, a fire department spokesman, said “it is illegal to dump anything into public waterways.”
There will be a hazardous materials waste collection day on Sept. 28, which is put on by the Ecology Action Center. There, people can dispose of household chemicals. For more information or to sign up, go to https://HHmclean.org.
