BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Revivalists hosted a public forum at the Bloomington library on Sunday, trying to come up with solutions for the current housing crisis.
The group’s mission is to improve their community through bottom-up solutions.
Panelists with the Bloomington-Normal Community Land Trust and McLean County Co-Housing discussed issues like homelessness, the increasing prices of homes and apartments and community engagement.
President of the Bloomington Revivalists, Noah Tang said having individual developers, instead of corporate developers, is one way to make homes affordable again.
“Other cities that are more comparable incisively to Normal would be South Bend, Indiana, and Muskegon, Michigan. They’ve done similar things, opening up their code, really advocating for this infill-type development that is more financially strong. Building a six-unit apartment is going to be much more expensive than building two buildings that are three units each. Allowing for that type of development is very important,” Tang said.
