BLOOMINGTON – The Bent Elementary Superstars are inviting you to their 100th Birthday Bash.

“It is an honor to be here, this year, celebrating 100 years of teaching and learning,” said Principal Guillermina Delgado.

The PTO started planning an anniversary celebration last year. This allowed the team to learn the school’s history as they prepare to share with the community.

“It has been a real treat to get to learn about the history of Bent. I’m really excited for all of our guests to get learn some of that information at our celebration,” PTO member Harriett Steinbach said.

Some history nuggets include the Hawthorne School being torn down so bent could be constructed. And in 1975 the students voted to have the superstars as the school’s mascot. But the event isn’t only for the community to learn about the school. It’s an opportunity for the seasoned superstars to walk down memory lane.

“I’m really excited for our Bent alums to come back. We’ve been working as hard as we can to let folks throughout the community to know that if they went to bent at any point that they are welcome to our celebration,” said Steinbach. “So, we’re really excited because we’ll have school tours. So, it’s going to be really fun for them to get to see what the school looks like now and reminiscence on how it looked when they were a student.”

Overall the PTO and school leadership are looking forward to bringing the community together for a fun time while celebrating a huge milestone.

“I’m so happy to see all the former superstars coming in, teachers who may be taught here and retired, former principals that are invited to come back and just see what the school looks like today,” said Delgado. “I love always hearing stories from adults who went to Bent.”

Bent Elementary is the bilingual school at the elementary level for Bloomington Public Schools District 87. The school became a bilingual school 19 years ago. It’s when Principal Delgado started her career as a second-grade teacher before becoming the school’s leader five years ago.

According to the school’s website, students hear motivational words of wisdom in English and Spanish each morning. Following the words of wisdom, students then recite the school’s pledge in both languages.

Because the school continuously celebrates diversity, Principal Delgado wants to make sure all feel welcome to next week’s fiesta. See below.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
