NORMAL – One person was killed and another remains hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting that happened early Sunday morning in Normal.
Normal police said the shooting happened around 3:42 a.m. at the intersection of University and Locust Streets near the Illinois State University campus.
Police were first called to break up a “pop-up party” of over 1,000 people at a park in the 300 block of North Main Street. Authorities said the group of people moved towards the ISU campus and the Circle K gas station and that is when shots were fired.
ISU police said the victims are not students at the university. The incident is still under investigation, but Normal Police Chief Steve Petrilli told our news partner WMBD-TV the shooting could turn out to be the town’s third homicide of the year.
Normal Mayor Chris Koos was at the scene of Sunday’s deadly shooting. He spoke briefly to reporters and said, “pop-up parties like this are a problem.”
The incident is being investigated by Normal Police and the McLean County Coroner’s Office.
