BLOOMINGTON – Ferrero is bringing 200 new jobs to the community with the opening of its first American Kinder Bueno production facility.

The chocolate company celebrated the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. Guests received treat bags and ice cream for people to top off with Kinder Bueno pieces. The creator of Nutella, Crunch and 100 Grand broke ground two years ago on the 169-square-foot facility.

“It makes me feel great. You know, it really is a testament to a lot of the things that we have done locally, not only with our staff being very easy to work with, but also some of the things that we do in terms of quality of life,” said Bloomington Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe. “We’ve done a lot of things locally to make Wilmington a great place to live very safe. And so that’s important.”

Monday’s celebration comes less than six months after Ferrero cut the ribbon for its first American chocolate factory located on the same site.

“I’m sure all of the other companies that are investing in Bloomington are seeing the same things we are, the combination of great employees, really good infrastructure and proximity to major, major metro markets make it an absolutely ideal place to invest, said Michael Lindsey, President and Chief Business Officer for Ferrero North America. “So I have to imagine all of our other partners who are investing in the area are seeing the same things that we are.”

This project cost was $214 million.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
