NORMAL – Multiple gunshots were heard Saturday afternoon in Normal near where a youth football game was being played, according to the Normal Police Department.

And the department’s chief said it appears, from an initial investigation, that the football game at One Normal Plaza was impetus for the shots being fired.

Officials with the department said that about 5:45 p.m., they were sent to the intersection of Lincoln and Beech streets on a report of an armed person. Callers had said there were multiple gunshots in the area, the department said.

Arriving officers were able to “secure” the scene and find evidences of a shooting but it was not immediately clear what happened. There were no reports of any injuries following this incident.

Additionally, there has been no reports of any property damaged by gunfire, the department said.

That’s near the Twin City Tigers, a youth football program, that was having a game. According to the group’s Facebook page, “We had an incident at our Varsity game today and gunshots were fired. Everyone is safe and there were no injuries. Normal PD responded quickly and is investigating the situation.”

Police Chief Steve Petrilli said Sunday afternoon that a preliminary investigation indicated an argument after the game, which was a “varsity level” game and likely involved 7th and 8th graders, seemed to have led to the gunshots.

In a phone interview, he reiterated that it appears no one was injured and no damage was found.

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
